Hillsborough Accounts for 385 of Florida's 485 Locally Acquired Dengue Cases as Mosquito Prevention Joins the Halloween Checklist
State surveillance counts 485 locally acquired dengue cases in Florida this year, 385 of them in Hillsborough County, and health officials have added mosquito prevention to the Halloween safety checklist.

Hillsborough County is carrying most of Florida's dengue burden this year. According to state surveillance efforts reported by Bay News 9, 485 locally acquired dengue cases have been reported in Florida this year, including 385 in Hillsborough County alone — roughly four of every five of the state's locally acquired cases.
The numbers are landing on the county's busiest outdoor night of the fall. Health officials have added mosquito prevention to the Halloween safety checklist as dengue cases continue to climb across Florida, the reporting says, on a Saturday when Tampa Bay children and parents will be outside in neighborhoods from early evening onward.
Locally acquired means the infections were picked up here rather than on a trip abroad, which is what makes the Hillsborough concentration a local health story and not a travel one. For families heading out on Halloween, the county's case count is the reason mosquito prevention now sits on the same checklist as the weekend's patrol and trick-or-treat safety guidance.
