Tampa Says It Has Passed Its 10,000-Unit Affordable Housing Goal, With 10,770 Units Planned, Underway or Built

The City of Tampa says it has surpassed the affordable housing goal Mayor Jane Castor set when she took office: 10,770 units now planned, underway or completed, backed by more than $100 million of city investment since 2019 - though almost half the count is still in the pipeline rather than move-in ready.

Tampa Says It Has Passed Its 10,000-Unit Affordable Housing Goal, With 10,770 Units Planned, Underway or Built (Tampa Watch News)

Tampa has passed the housing number its mayor set for her administration. In an October 28 release, the city announced it has surpassed the goal of facilitating 10,000 affordable housing opportunities, with 10,770 units now planned, underway or completed. 'When I took office, I set a goal that was ambitious,' Mayor Jane Castor said in the release. 'Today, we can proudly say we didn't just meet that goal; we surpassed it.'

The city's own accounting comes with the honest asterisk: almost half of the 10,770 are currently under construction or completed, which means the rest are still planned rather than built. Since 2019 the city says it has invested more than $100 million in affordable housing initiatives and housing assistance, and it names Rome Yards, West River and Marquee Square among its major redevelopments. At the Army/Navy redevelopment site in North Downtown, more than 1,100 units are planned, with more than 700 of them designated for income-eligible households.

The release also counts the smaller doors into housing: the Housing Rehabilitation and Renovation Program, which helps income-qualified homeowners pay for critical repairs, and the DARE to Own the Dream program, whose down-payment and closing-cost help made 71 first-time homeowners in fiscal year 2026 - passing the previous record of 70 set the year before.
