I-4's Night Work Moves East This Week: Westbound Lanes Close Nightly, and the Exit 9 Ramps to I-75 Shut Tuesday Through Thursday

I-4's Night Work Moves East This Week: Westbound Lanes Close Nightly, and the Exit 9 Ramps to I-75 Shut Tuesday Through Thursday (Tampa Watch News)

Drivers crossing east Tampa late this week will meet the work zone on I-4. The Florida Department of Transportation's project page for the I-4 safety and operational improvements lists westbound lane closures from east of the Tampa Bypass Canal to west of the I-75 ramps, running Sunday, November 1 through Thursday, November 5, nights from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.

The harder closure starts Tuesday night. The eastbound I-4 ramps to northbound and southbound I-75 - Exit 9 - will close nightly on Tuesday, November 3, Wednesday, November 4 and Thursday, November 5, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., weather permitting. FDOT's detour is a loop: exit at Exit 10, turn left on Mango Road, re-enter the interstate using the westbound entrance ramp, and proceed back to Exit 9 to reach I-75 north or south.

The work is building an additional auxiliary lane along eastbound I-4 from east of the Bypass Canal to west of the I-75 exit ramps. The $8.6 million project, built by Watson Civil Construction, started March 23, 2026 and is estimated to finish in spring 2027 - and FDOT notes that work requiring lane closures on this corridor happens at night, which is why the daytime drive stays clear while the nights stay busy.
